Low Self Esteem – Sometimes Self Sabotage

Matthew Hick

It’s easy to blame the way we were raised, or the people around us for our lack of self esteem, but consider this: maybe you’re the culprit stealing your own self-esteem. Could you be unintentionally sabotaging your own self-esteem? Ask yourself these important questions:

Do I Value Myself?

Do you take the time to take care of yourself? Are you eating right? Exercising regularly? Going to the doctor when you need to? Or are you one of those people who don’t really believe you deserve to take a Saturday off once in awhile from cleaning the house and doing things for others to pamper yourself?

Do I Avoid Intimacy With Others?

When you don’t think you truly deserve to be happy or deserve to be loved, you have the tendency to back away from those around you and not allow yourself to truly connect on a deeper, more personal and intimidate level. Think about the things you and your friends talk about. Do you share the things that matter most in your life, or do you have the tendency to just gloss over your wants, need and personal dreams?

Do You Often Put Yourself Down?

Those around us are eager enough to put us down, there’s no need for us to down-talk ourselves. Are you harder on you than you are on others? Do you expect more from yourself than you do anyone else in your home or life? Even if you aren’t saying negative things about yourself out loud, are you thinking them?

Are You Staying So Busy You Don’t Have Time To Deal With Yourself?

Are you keeping yourself s busy with your job, your kids, church activities, volunteer opportunities and the like, that you have little or no time to rally look at yourself and the things you may be dealing with on a personal emotional level?

Do You Find It Difficult to Be Happy With Anything In Your Life?

Do you hate your job; want a bigger better house; wish your spouse would help out more? Wish your kids were better behaved? Covet your neighbor’s new car? Want a garden like the local gardening clubs? In short, do you find yourself dissatisfied with everything and everyone in your life – including yourself?

Do You Find Yourself Letting Your Appearance Go?

Are you suddenly willing to let yourself out of the house with little or no makeup, your hair in tangles and your clothes wrinkled because you think you don’t deserve to look good or no one will notice anyway because you’re always a mess anyway?

If you answered yes to one or more of the questions above, you may be struggling with a low self-esteem issue. Without better self esteem you may lack the ability t try new things; experience life to its fullest and have the confidence and power to take care of yourself and your family.

Now that you know you may have an issue, take the time to really look at the reasons why your self-esteem has taken a nosedive and do something about it!

What is Self-esteem?

One of the major challenges we face in the 21st century is handling the amount of choices we have. It’s very complex. When you have hundreds of things to choose from you tend to hesitate and being clueless what direction to go. You do not know for sure what would be the best to do, what activity would give you the most satisfaction or what would you really love to do.

That’s one major reason why people never finish what they started. Their interest dies away before they would accomplish something. You have to be more focused on what you do, because there are more destructive patterns to get you out of the track than was before. And this is a fairly “new” phenomenon in our society. There are so many other excitements out there, why should you keep doing whatever you started to do? Let’s do something else, something fun. We can finish this later.

And that’s where you damage your self-esteem and self confidence. There is NO accomplishments, NO results, the job is NOT done. Can you be proud of yourself? Of course NOT. Did you achieve something? You did NOT.When you start something you’d better finish it otherwise your opinion of yourself will be hurt.

And that’s what self-esteem is: YOUR OPINION, YOUR FEELINGS, YOUR APPRAISAL and YOUR EVALUATION of yourself.Self-esteem is your approach toward the “attacks” of reality.

What is high self-esteem?

When you feel great, happy and satisfied about yourself you have healthy, high self-esteem. When you love and respect yourself, when you feel confident to achieve anything you wish to achieve you have high self-esteem. When you have tons of energy and smiling a lot you have high self-esteem. The more tasks you accomplish the higher the level of your self-esteem is going to be.

What is low self-esteem?

Basically the opposite. When you do not feel good, happy and satisfied about yourself. Low self-esteem comes from not loving and respecting yourself. When you think you are not worth of love, respect and happiness you have low self-esteem. When you are focusing on your weaknesses instead of your strengths you develop low self-esteem.

Feeling good about yourself is essential to overcome the obstacles in your life, to be more active and energetic to face challenges on a daily basis. When you love and respect yourself you radiate that positive energy toward people who you interact with. You will more likely to have positive feedback from them if they feel that you are confident and you have high self-esteem.

Developing self-esteem is crucial to your well-being. To live an active, happy, fun life you have to work on your self-esteem. It’s not easy and change does not happen overnight. If you set slightly challenging, but achievable goals you can move toward accomplishing them. Once you finish them would give you the satisfaction, the feeling that you did something great, something of value. And then you can relax, enjoy life and can get ready for your next challenge.
