What are some good ways to boost your self-esteem?

I’ve always been a really shy, quiet person with low self-esteem. I really want to change this, because it has really prevented me from achieving many things I’d like to do in life (ie get a new/better job, make more friends, etc). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Tips for Overcoming Low Self Esteem

Having a poor opinion of yourself and of your abilities can hinder many of your goals and dreams. Overcoming low self esteem is one of the first steps you should take if you want to truly be able to live you best possible life.

Of course, for many, that is easier said than done. Some people have such a low opinion of themselves that even making the first step toward overcoming low self esteem can seem overwhelming. The good news is that you CAN do it.

Here are some tips to help you learn to see the good in yourself and to learn to trust in your own abilities.



Make Improvements



Sometimes, part of the things that causes one to have low self esteem are things that can be changed. Being overweight or out of shape is one example. Feeling tired all of the time is another. Some things, you have no control over, while others are fully within your power to change.

If you’re overweight, start eating better and take up an exercise routine. When you eat right and exercise, there will be many positive changes both to how you look and to how you feel. For some, this is a great first step in overcoming low self esteem.

If you’re tired all of the time, turn off the television and computer a couple of hours earlier and make it a point to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. When you get enough sleep you will awake feeling refreshed and will have more energy and be able to accomplish more throughout the day.



Accept Some Flaws



This falls into the “easier said than done” category, but it is a must for overcoming low self esteem. There are always going to be things about yourself that you do not like. Just understand that the same is true for every single person on the planet, no matter how perfect they may seem in your eyes.

One of the tricks for overcoming low self esteem is to learn to focus not on your flaws, but on your strengths.



Try Something New



A common trait among those with low self esteem is the feeling that they cannot accomplish certain things. Unfortunately, this is often a self-fulfilling prophecy. In overcoming low self esteem, you must learn that you are capable of doing a lot more than you think.

One way to do this is by trying something new. Take a class, such as photography or pottery. Do something daring like skydiving or parasailing. The exact activity or skill is less important than just getting out there and trying something you’ve never done before.

With each new skill and new adventure, you’ll be able to add another notch to your level of confidence. You’ll learn that you can accomplish things, and that there is nothing you can’t do when you put your mind to it.



Talk to Your Low Self Esteem



This might sound a little strange, but it is key in overcoming low self esteem. For example, your low self esteem may say “Just be quiet, you don’t have anything worth contributing in this meeting.” You need to “talk” to your low self esteem and say (silently of course!) “Yes, I do! I have a good idea, and I’m going to share it.” And then do it. Even if your idea isn’t received very well, that doesn’t mean it was not worth sharing.

In overcoming low self esteem, you cannot let the negative thoughts have the last word.

Just the fact that you are trying to learn about overcoming low self esteem means that somewhere inside you know that you are worth it. Do one thing every day to put the messages from your low self esteem in their place.

Before you know it, you’ll be more confident and on the road to accomplishing all of your dreams.

LOW SELF ESTEEM is everywhere now days.  For example, do you know that seven million girls and women have eating disorders, compared with 1 million boys and men.  Ten percent report onset at 10 years or younger; 33 percent ages 11 to 15.  Do you know that twenty percent College-aged women in America are bulimic.  And they many more examples like that.  Low self esteem can come in many different forms.  Self pity, jealousy, codependency, emotional infidelity, low self worth, loneliness, and guilt are the major sign.  Other signs are blaming others, denial, unable to express feelings, depending on others for self-confidence and a lack for personal boundaries are all signs of low self esteem

The definition of Low Self Esteem is “to not value, or have high regard for yourself.  People with low self esteem never feel in charge of their own lives.  They often feel like victims. They feel like outsiders, left out, unimportant, etc”.   Your mind can play costly tricks on you, nothing you do seems to go right, you believe that most people do not like you, you believe that you are not attractive, you choose something and it turns out to be the worst one, you are afraid to converse with others for fear that what you say might not make sense, you feel swallowed up in a whirlpool of frustration.

Self pity is defined as you live paralyzed, self-pity becomes a form of manipulation that you might use to get things from other people.  Jealousy is considered negative when it is an emotion that shows up in a treat in a relationship.  It can very toxic if it is used to manipulate a relationship.  Codependency is not considered a disease, it is an emotional and behavioral condition that learned and affects the ability to have a healthy relationship or a relationship period.  Some of the signs are gives more than gets in returns, easily hurts when not recognize and always feels guilty when expressing thoughts.

Emotional infidelity can be caused by a lack of balance between family, work and taking care of yourself. Afraid to get intimate with your love one.  Need drama in life. Low self worth is usually caused by the believe that people believe their worthiness is based on their performance and other people opinions. Loneliness can get very completed as people will isolate themselves and are usually alienated.  Guilt is usually people that will punished themselves and have a strong believe they are a bad person.

It is very important to know what to do to overcome low self-esteem.  Make sure that you are very knowledge about the subject and don’t do it alone.  Always ask for help.  Never think you can do this alone. Low self-esteem affects millions of people every day and knowing how to recognize the symptoms and knowing what to do could really help you or a love one.

Surround Yourself With Positive People- Unfortunately, low self-esteem just doesn’t result from self-criticism, but from the criticisms of negative people around us. If you’re continually surrounded by people who are critical of you or make mean comments, then it’s time to get yourself some new friends! Surrounding yourself with more positive influences (whether it’s someone you really look up to at school or work or a friend who always has a kind word) will do much when overcoming low self-esteem.

Make Daily Goals- Don’t just sit through that next board meeting without speaking up! Make it a daily goal to voice your opinion in class or at work. Each time you fulfill that daily goal, give yourself a small reward, such as a treat after dinner or a new video game. As these goals become easier, up the ante: speak three to four times during a meeting or classroom session, or volunteer to take the lead at the next staff meeting. You’ll have fun meeting your goals, and you’ll hardly realize that you’re skyrocketing your own self-esteem along the way!

Do The Things You Love- During these busy times, it can be easy to forget to do those activities that make us feel happy. Whether you love reading a good mystery novel or enjoy visiting museums, do the things you love in order to give yourself that boost you need. Again, overcoming low self-esteem is all about surrounding yourself with positive influences – and the more positive your environment, the more you’ll blossom and grow into a confident and self-assured person!
